Training/Winter break

Students,
Have a great winter break! Enjoy the holidays and do not eat too much! The 5th and 6th graders have become familiar with some of my cycling and running training here as I show them my results after some of my runs. If anyone exercises over the break please post it in the comment section with your name so you can receive some recognition and you can motivate and challenge others to be active.

Today's training- three miles jogging in 28 minutes around the School 7 neighborhood.
- It is a great day so I will be riding for around 60-90 minutes on my bicycle after school.

Sincerely,
Mr. Goldstein

Hw# 2 and Training

Students,
Reminder! HW#2 is due on Wednesday. Make sure you get your good grade for the assignment, it can be be found lower down on this blog!

As many of you know I have been increasing my training a lot!
As of now, I am focused on just getting a lot of miles in per week running and bicycling. I am just going slow and not worrying about my speed right now. As time goes on I will start to go shorter distances and start to focus more on my speed (which is known as intensity).

Please post any questions or comments on the blog!

Training (continued)

Students,
Last night I got my training run in after the sun went down. I ran for 25 minutes around my neighborhood. When the days are short in the winter months it is hard to always get my run in while the sun is still out. It is important when working out or playing sports in the dark that you wear reflective gear so cars are able to see you. I wear a reflective green stripe around my arm so cars can see me.

Training with Friends

Students,
Last night during my training run I was able to run with my friend for about 40 minutes and 4.5 miles. It is great to train with friends sometimes because it can add to your motivation to get a great workout in. Think about what friends you can ask to work out with you if you think it is something that will help!

Sincerely,
Mr. Goldstein

PS- Stay posted for a review for the health tests coming up in 5th and 6th grade.

Special Education Health Review (Trexler/Woods)

Dear Ms. Trexler and Ms. Woods' students,
Here are some things to remember for our test coming up (the date is to be announced in class this coming week).

The muscular system- This system is made up of the muscles and it helps us to move.
The skeletal system- This system is made up of the bones and it helps the body to keep its structure.
Breathing- we breathe in oxygen from the air which then goes to our lungs.
That oxygen is then picked up by the blood that runs through our body.
The blood then brings oxygen to our muscles which use oxygen to make energy.
Without oxygen, the muscle and heart tissue in our body would die.
Digestion- The food that we eat is made up of calories.
Calories are energy.
Our stomach digests the food and the energy is either used by us, stored or wasted by our body.

Hope this helps,
Mr. Goldstein

Stretching

Hello students!
I want to remind you of one major part of our physical education class because a lot of people missed the answer on the test! Stretching in gym is done for two reasons; to prevent an injury and also to help us perform better in sports. We are stretching in gym for a reason and it is important to remember this especially when we get older and become adults. It is easier to get injured in sports as we get older!

The NY Giants football team achieved their first win of the season Monday night against the St. Louis Rams. They did not play the greatest game, but they won anyway. Weight Training

I have recently started a weight training program where I go to the gym about 4 times per week and lift weights. It is important to give your muscles a couple of days of rest after lifting; so I lift with my lower body muscles and then rest them for a couple of days. While I am resting my lower body I lift with my upper body muscles!

Looking forward to fitness unit testing next week!

Flag Football

Hi students,
Again I am excited to be back and this looks like it is going to be a great school year. This past Saturday my informal flag football league started with my friends, something we will be playing here at School 7. My muscles became very sore when I woke up the next morning because I had just used them in a way they were not used to. I am very active, but I was moving at speeds and in directions that my body has not experienced in a while. You may experience some muscle soreness as we start our Physical Education Fitness Unit, but it will start to lessen as your body gets used to it!

Mr Goldstein
PS- If this really confused you, ask me about it during class!

It is the the first day of school and I am so excited to see everyone back and ready to work hard. I am especially excited for the physical education and health classes this year, as we will be taking our programs to a new level. This will be a year of increased skill development, cognitive learning and competition. I will be constantly updating the blog this year with my fitness plans and competitions, information pertaining to class, and extra credit opportunitites!

Another 5k race (personal record)

I participated in another 5k race last week, achieving a PR (which is known in runner's terms as a new personal record. I ran 3.1 miles in 21 minutes and 12 seconds, which averages out to a 6 minutes and 49 second per mile pace. I was happy with the result and while continuing my training I should be able to improve on that time even further. My ultimate goal is to run the race under 20 minutes. I finished in 22nd out of 167 male runners.

NHL Playoffs

The finals are going on right now in professional ice hockey in North America. To win the Stanley Cup, one team needs to be the first to win 4 games. The Vancouver Canucks (a Canadian team) are leading The Boston Bruins 2 games to 0. The two games so far have been very exciting, physical and full of skillful hockey. The games can be seen on channel 4 (NBC) and game 3 is tonight (Monday 6/6) and game 4 is Wednesday the 8th.

5k results

A 5k race means runners must run 5,000 meters which is equal to 3.1 miles. On Wednesday I ran a 5k trail race and my results can be found on this webpage https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AicDo8QO8h6gdGYzalowdm1sSUV1WVdZRU9jaEVXcEE&hl=en#gid=7. I finished #10 out of 40+ runners, but would still like to improve on my time in the coming weeks and months (make sure when you look at the results you click to week #7 on the bottom of the spreadsheet and you will find me at #10). Improving my time would take further training and more experience as I improve my racing strategy.

Intramural Sports

We have had a great time in the Intramural Sports Program at School 7. I would like to see more students in grades 7 and 8 participating. Now that the program is already almost half over I am excited about the 6th graders being able to participate next year! Also, the 8th graders in the program played a very intense game of floor hockey. Hockey is a great sport that is not very popular in our school, but I think that will change in the coming years.

Recovery

On Saturday, I participated in many different sports including a cycling training ride, a flag football game and a little bit of basketball as well. I ran on Sunday and Monday and cycled to school and back on Monday. After all of this activity and training I felt a little soreness in some of my leg muscles so I will be resting on Tuesday from training. It is important to rest during training to ensure the best possible performance.

Race Day

On Sunday morning I was supposed to have a race that involved both running and cycling. Unfortunately, the rain came down so hard on Sunday morning that it was too dangerous to have the cycling part of the race. I ended up just running a 10,000 meter race which is 6.2 miles in length. I finished in 44 minutes which is about 7 minutes and 20 seconds per mile. I finished in 18th place out of over 5o runners. It was my first time racing at that distance so I am confident I will be able to improve a lot with training.

Monday 5/9

Welcome back to school, I hope everyone had a great weekend and Mother's Day. Today I plan on doing some muscular endurance work during the day with a push-up/pull-up routine that I sometimes do. Also, at the end of the day I brought running clothes with me to run the trails at Garret Mountain after school. I really enjoy running there because there are great views of the city of Paterson and it is very relaxing. Trail running also takes my mind off thinking about the act of running itself compared to running on the roads or the track. It sometimes makes me forget that I am actually tired while running!

Extra Credit- Bring me a slip of paper with your name and tell me which part of fitness (out of the five we have been learning about) running on a trail works on before the end of the week.

Spring Break Exercise Update

I spent a lot of my spring break training in Virginia as I visited family members there. I am preparing for a big race on May 15th. I cycled most days for about 30-40 miles each day and also did a lot of running. The weather there was very hot at times so I had to go earlier in the morning to prevent working out in more intense heat. The scenery there was very pleasant. I believe that when you run or ride through a place, you get to experience more than simply driving through it.

Good Luck on NJASK tests coming this week!

Hey Everyone/Spring Break

Hi students!
I thought this would be a great way for everyone at School 7 to see my physical activity and exercise program so you can gain some ideas or inspiration to stay active and healthy. I am planning to post not only my daily nutrition and exercise information, but also some questions and polls that can result in extra credit points along the way to people who follow my blog! I hope everyone is having a great spring break and I am looking forward to starting school again soon.

Sincerely,
Mr. Goldstein
